Engineering Documents

Most of the following documents are in PDF format. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you really shouldn't be allowed to use that computer unsupervised. If you seriously don't have the free reader, go HERE and you can download a reader for your operation system at no charge. Some of the documents are in MicroSoft Excel format which require Excel or another spreadsheet that can import Excel files to use. Files in AppleWorks format require AppleWorks or ClarisWorks to use. Design & Construction Engineers has assembled these documents from many sources and does not offer any guarantees as to their accuracy. We are making them available to the public in order to contribute to the pool of engineering knowledge for the benefit of our profession. Please contact us with any errors you find or questions you have about the documents. Enjoy!
DCE Marketing Flyer DCE Marketing Flyer in PDF. Okay--so this isn't really an "engineering" document but we have to pay the rent don't we? Last Updated 5/1/2004 (116KB)
As Built Corrections to the 2005 NEC. This PDF is straight from the NFPA web site covering typos and corrections to the first edition of the 2005 NEC. You know you have a first edition if the last digit of the string of numbers at the bottom of the title page (inside cover) ends in "1". It would be wise for you to check the NFPA web site for other updates but finding them on their web site is not very easy. Updated 7/15/2005 (19KB)
As Built As Built Chart. This chart is a road map to finding out where you are in the design process all the way from schematic design through construction documents. (Don't get too excited -- this is just a joke chart for laughs). Updated 9/16/2004 (49KB)
AppleWorks Feeder Calculator Feeder Calculator in Appleworks. This is a zipped AppleWorks spreadsheet that will calculate the minimum sized EMT conduit needed to hold the conductors that you pick. Currently, this spreadsheet will only do EMT conduit and will only size for THW and THHN wire size. We hope to eventually finish off the tables and formulas so that you can choose other conduits and wire types. Since AppleWorks does not allow drop down lists, we wound up finishing the Excel version first. Last Updated 3/1/2004 (12KB)
Excel Feeder Calculator Updated Feeder Calculator in Excel. This is a zipped Excel template spreadsheet that will calculate the minimum sized conduit needed to hold the conductors that you pick. Programs and devices to size conduit are nothing new and you may even have one yourself. This one is particularly slick because you can designate the insulation of each conductor and pick almost any type of conduit via drop down lists. Now updated so that you don't have to have wire in the first cell for the calculator to work correctly. Last Updated 7/14/2010 to correct the fill area of 1/2" PVC-40 (22KB)
Excel Cable Calculator Updated Feeder & Cable Calculator in Excel. This is an experimental version of the feeder calculator that we've had on this site for years. The file is a zipped Excel template. This version of the spreadsheet allows feeder conductors on the top half of the calculator and then low voltage and fiber optic cables on the lower half. Both calculate into the same conduit incase you are putting fiber and power together. The trouble with calculating conduit fills for low voltage and fiber is that there are no true standards. These cables come in plenum, riser, outdoor, underground, shielded, and unshielded versions. Furthermore, cables of the same type vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so use this calculator at your own risk for general sizing since conduit fill rules don't actually apply to communications wiring. Last Updated 7/14/2010 to correct the fill area of 1/2" PVC-40 (24KB)
Electrical Feeder Tables Feeder Tables in PDF. This is a 12 page document with pre-made electrical feeders for services, feeders, and motors. Each feeder is coded and tells what amperage or motor it is sized for. If you routinely have to size electrical feeders and you don't mind using the standards that we have chosen, tables such as these can save much time and reduce errors. Last Updated 11/21/2007 to update NEC references (330KB)
Panel Schedule Panel Schedule in PDF. This is a two page PDF for letter size paper. It has a nice format of a panel schedule that is intended to be used for to survey a panel and make a written record of the breakers and panel characteristics. Page one is for 3-phase panels and page 2 is for 1-phase. You may note that the sheets print off center. Don't be alarmed--we did this on purpose so that the sheets can be punched and placed in a 3-ring binder. Last Updated 3/1/2004 (64KB)
Panel Schedule Panel Schedules in Excel. Zip file of two Excel Panel Spreadsheets. This zip file contains two Excel spreadsheets--one is for 1-phase panels and the other is for 3-phase panels. These spreadsheets are rather complex as they preform NEC style calculations of the loads as you enter them and assign them categories. These spreadsheets also allow you to link them to one another so that one sub-feeds another. To do this, the spreadsheets have numerous macros which have been digitally signed. There is a tab on each spreadsheet with three pages of instructions. Updated with new macro digital signatures which made the files larger for some reason. Last Updated 2/5/2010 (350KB)
AppleWorks Feeder Calculator Transformer Information in PDF. This is a three page document listing many characteristics of standard ANSI size dry transformers such as their primary current, secondary current, impedance, and short circuit current. It also lists the dimensions and weight of a Square D transformer of that size. There are a couple of pages of pages devoted to OPPD utility transformers which list their impedance and short circuit current as well as a chart explaining what the OPPD marking codes mean. Last Updated 6/14/2004 (76KB)
CAD Sizing Chart CAD Sizing Chart in PDF. A PDF of an Excel based chart which assists draftsmen to determine what scale to pick for a drawing and how large the text must be in order to display correctly. Last Updated 4/15/2004 (17KB)
Electrical Symbols Electrical Symbol Legend in PDF. A PDF of our electrical symbols. The sheet is an 8.5x14 (legal paper). Last Updated 11/29/2005 (126KB)
